As families prepare to welcome the harvest festival, it\u2019s important to keep pets safe this Sukkot! One of the best ways to do this is to keep pets out of your sukkah, because the enclosed space can have a number of potential hazards including decorations and food. Read on for more tips on how to keep your pets safe!<\/p>\n

Making challah? Always keep pets out of the kitchen while baking with yeast. If eaten, <\/span>the<\/span> <\/span>yeast dough<\/span><\/span><\/a> can cause the <\/span>dough<\/span> to rise in your pet\u2019s stomach. This can lead to <\/span><\/span>al<\/span>co<\/span>hol<\/span> poisoning<\/span><\/span><\/a>, as well as painful bloating<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n These stuffed dumplings can be toxic to pets if they <\/span>contain<\/span> <\/span>garlic or onions<\/span><\/span><\/a>. Additionally, the <\/span>high levels<\/span> of salt and fat can cause <\/span><\/span>pancreatitis<\/span><\/span><\/a>, a painful condition that <\/span>requires<\/span> veterinary attention.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Certain fruits and vegetables such as <\/span>citrus, <\/span><\/span>grapes<\/span><\/span><\/a>, <\/span><\/span>garlic, leeks, chives, and onions<\/span><\/span><\/a>, are toxic to pets. Greenery and foliage may be toxic to your pets, <\/span>especially <\/span><\/span>sago palms<\/span><\/span><\/a>, <\/span>so <\/span>triple check<\/span> that<\/span> your plants are non-toxic by using <\/span><\/span>ASPCA\u2019s Plant Guide<\/span><\/span><\/a>. If decorating with tinsel, streamers, and similar decor, pet parents should know these can cause <\/span>a <\/span>choking hazard<\/span> or obstruction if swallowed.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n When using <\/span>lit <\/span>candles, place <\/span>them<\/span> out of your pet\u2019s reach and always <\/span>monitor<\/span> closely to prevent a fire hazard. Alternatively, consider using battery-operated candles<\/span> to keep your pets and home safe!<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n If <\/span>you’re<\/span> hosting a dinner in your sukkah, remind guests not to feed your pets without permission and to keep hazards like purses out of reach. To prevent potential emergencies and help your pets avoid feeling overwhelmed or stressed, consider keeping them in a crate or a closed-off room inside your house during the event.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n By being aware of these possible pet emergencies, you can take precautions to keep your pets safe during your Sukkot celebrations.
