Call ahead of your arrival so the veterinary team knows to expect you, and if your pet\u2019s condition worsens, call the team back to inform them of the status change.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Most people are aware of common plants that can harm their pets like <\/span><\/span>lilies<\/span><\/span><\/a> and <\/span><\/span>tulips<\/span>,<\/span><\/span><\/a> but a little-known <\/span>plant<\/span> that can cause your pet to get sick is aloe vera. <\/span>Both the plant itself and products made with the plant, such as <\/span>gels and lotions<\/span>, <\/span>can cause symptoms in<\/span> dogs and cats. So, think twice before placing that cute potted aloe vera plant in your living room or lea<\/span>ving out that bottle of aloe vera gel after applying<\/span> it<\/span> to your sunburn.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Danger<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

Aloe vera plants contain compounds <\/span>called <\/span>anthraquinone glycosides and saponins<\/span><\/b>, which are the compounds found in latex. When eaten, these compounds stimulate the GI tract to encourage more rapid bowel movements by increasing mucus production in the small intestine and large bowel and increasing the amount of water in the colon.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This can lead to <\/span>diarrhea<\/span><\/a>, and occasionally vomiting, which <\/span>can cause <\/span><\/b>significant dehydration in pets<\/span><\/b>. The severity of diarrhea depends on the amount of aloe your pet consumed and their size, but the loss of water and electrolytes can cause:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
