FNA is the most common way to diagnose mast cell tumors, although biopsy may also be used.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559685&quot;:0,&quot;335559737&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:279}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Dr. Meyer <strong>prescribed two medications<\/strong> for Sally \u2013 an antihistamine and a stomach protectant (i.e. Pepcid). The reason Sally required these medications is that <strong>mast cells are composed of allergy cells<\/strong>. As such, they can release histamine when poked, squeezed, or prodded. He performed an ultrasound to ensure that there wasn\u2019t additional cancer elsewhere in Sally\u2019s body. Fortunately, no metastasis was seen.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:279}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"TextRun SCXW179421231 BCX8\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW179421231 BCX8\">Treatment Options for Mast Cell Tumors:<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW179421231 BCX8\" data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:279}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Surgical Removal\u00a0<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><span class=\"TextRun SCXW5477449 BCX8\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"none\"><strong><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW5477449 BCX8\">Surgical removal is the most effective treatment <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW5477449 BCX8\">option<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW5477449 BCX8\"><strong> for mast cell tumors that have not yet spread.<\/strong> It is important for the surgeon to remove both the mass and an area of healthy tissue around it to get <\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW5477449 BCX8\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW5477449 BCX8\">complete surgical margins<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW5477449 BCX8\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW5477449 BCX8\">. The metastatic rate for low grade tumors is also low (10-15%). However, follow-up therapy including radiation therapy and\/or chemotherapy is often recommended for high-grade tumors.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW42520460 BCX8\" data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:279}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong><span class=\"TextRun SCXW120243348 BCX8\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW120243348 BCX8\">Radiation Therapy<\/span><\/span><\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"none\">For pets who cannot undergo surgery, who have incomplete surgical margins, who have tumors that have metastasized or are in an area with a poor prognosis for surgical removal such as the mouth or jaw, radiation therapy may be considered. <strong>Radiation therapy involves daily treatments for two to three weeks.<\/strong> Beams of radiation are directed and centered on the tumor or the surgical incision. Because surgery with complete margins can be curative, I asked the surgeon to review Sally\u2019s surgical scar to see if additional tissue could be removed. The surgeon was not confident that she could get larger margins due to where Sally\u2019s tumor had been located.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559685&quot;:720,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:279}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">I have decided to proceed with electrochemotherapy for Sally to ensure her best chance at a long, healthy life.
