It\u2019s a belief founded in reality, but it\u2019s not an assured death sentence for the animal, especially if the medical team approaches the case with consideration.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9328 aligncenter\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/10.png\" alt=\"A white pet rabbit lying down on an exam table in front of a veterinarian with gloved hands. A handful of studies have looked at perianesthetic mortality in exotic animals \u2013 small mammals (S<em>ources 1 &amp; 2<\/em>), <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">snakes (S<em>ource <\/em><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><em>3<\/em>)<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, and birds (S<em>ources 4 &amp; 5<\/em>)<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. Before each <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW242663130 BCX8\">pet\u2019s procedure<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW242663130 BCX8\">, <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW242663130 BCX8\">our Anesthesia team and our Avian &amp; Exotic Medicine team<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW242663130 BCX8\">have a group discussion of <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW242663130 BCX8\">the p<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW242663130 BCX8\">et<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW242663130 BCX8\">\u2019s medical history, reason for anesthesia, proposed anesthetic drug protocols, instrumentation needs, and any <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW242663130 BCX8\">anticipated<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW242663130 BCX8\"> complications. Intubate and mechanically ventilate as many patients as possible<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW228831783 BCX8\">.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW228831783 BCX8\" data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW167116475 BCX8\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW167116475 BCX8\">Intubation is the placement of a tube into the trachea<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW167116475 BCX8\"> (windpipe)<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW167116475 BCX8\">. Doing so allows us to breathe for the p<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW167116475 BCX8\">e<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW167116475 BCX8\">t<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW167116475 BCX8\"> which is <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW167116475 BCX8\">a big help<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW167116475 BCX8\"> since anesthetic drugs often suppress the animal\u2019s breathing \u2013 which can lead to reduced oxygen delivery to the body and increases the risk of <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SpellingErrorV2Themed SCXW167116475 BCX8\">perianesthetic<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW167116475 BCX8\"> mortality. Our team is skilled at intubating everything<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW167116475 BCX8\">from macaws to budgies, leopard geckos to pythons, rabbits to<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW167116475 BCX8\">guinea pigs<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW167116475 BCX8\">. <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW167116475 BCX8\">Once the p<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW167116475 BCX8\">e<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW167116475 BCX8\">t is intubated, we connect them to a ventilator specially designed for smaller <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW167116475 BCX8\">animals<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW167116475 BCX8\">. Using multiple CRIs not only gives us intricate control over pets\u2019 anesthetic depth, but also the ability to increase pain control when needed.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Of course, using CRIs requires placing IV catheters, so we do so in nearly every animal we anesthetize. We often place more than one IV catheter so we can use more CRIs! If the patient is too small or too sick for an IV catheter, we can place a catheter into a long bone (called an intraosseous or IO catheter), which functions in the same way, allowing us to give CRIs and fluids directly into the circulatory system.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9326 aligncenter\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/6-2.png\" alt=\"Two photo collage.
