BCX0\"> with this condition have inflammation in the lower urinary tract without the presence of a bacterial infection<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW229265561 BCX0\">. <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW229265561 BCX0\">FIC can cause urethral spasms as well as<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW229265561 BCX0\">crystalline-mucous plugs within the urethra<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW229265561 BCX0\">. <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW229265561 BCX0\">T<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW229265561 BCX0\">he male urethra is quite narrow, <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW229265561 BCX0\">so a<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW229265561 BCX0\"> life-threatening urinary obstruction <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span class=\"NormalTextRun BCX0 SCXW228723477\">Young to middle-aged indoor cats appear to have a higher incidence of FIC. Cats may be predisposed to FIC during times of stress<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun BCX0 SCXW228723477\">, including<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun BCX0 SCXW228723477\"> c<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun BCX0 SCXW228723477\">hanges in routine<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun BCX0 SCXW228723477\">. In an unobstructed cat, the urinary bladder will be small to moderate in size and soft. Obstructed cats often have a large, firm, painful urinary bladder that can be felt during the exam. Diagnosis of FIC is made by ruling out other medical conditions that can cause similar clinical signs:<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"3\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">A urinalysis typically reveals inflammatory cells without a substantial number of bacteria.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"3\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"2\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Urine pH is often neutral or basic.<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"3\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"2\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aercmn.com\/blog\/urinary-crystals-in-pets\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Struvite crystals<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> are commonly, though not always, present in the urine.<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"3\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"2\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">A urine culture is usually negative, ruling out infection.<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"3\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"2\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Abdominal X-rays and\/or ultrasound may reveal tiny grit within the urinary bladder and\/or urethra. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><span class=\"TextRun SCXW248999760 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW248999760 BCX0\">In-Hospital Treatment:<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW248999760 BCX0\" data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW242945331 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW242945331 BCX0\">Cats with <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW242945331 BCX0\">signs of FIC without obstruction are treated supportively and symptomatically. Therapies often include medications for discomfort and fluid therapy. Cats <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW242945331 BCX0\">with a urinary obstruction need to be sedated and unobstructed. <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW242945331 BCX0\">A<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW242945331 BCX0\"> urinary catheter is <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW242945331 BCX0\">placed,<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW242945331 BCX0\"> and in<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW242945331 BCX0\">&#8211;<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW242945331 BCX0\">hospital management is <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW242945331 BCX0\">indicated<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW242945331 BCX0\"> in these cats.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW242945331 BCX0\" data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span class=\"TextRun SCXW144835111 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW144835111 BCX0\">Management Strategies at H<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW144835111 BCX0\">ome<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW144835111 BCX0\">:<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW144835111 BCX0\" data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">FIC can be a challenging medical condition to manage. Signs may improve and then recur, making this disease process frustrating for cat owners. Helpful management strategies include the following:<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li data-leveltext=\"%1.\" data-font=\"\" data-listid=\"1\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Provide one litter box per cat, plus one. For example, if you have two cats, provide three litter boxes.<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"%1.\" data-font=\"\" data-listid=\"1\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Minimize changes in general routine and stressors when possible. Additionally, if you anticipate a stressful event for your cat (such as a move, addition or subtraction of a pet or human, or rearranging the furniture,) be diligent about monitoring for signs of FIC and urinary obstruction.<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"%1.\" data-font=\"\" data-listid=\"1\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Provide many opportunities for fluid intake. Some cats like to drink out of full cups of fresh water \u2013 leave a few around the house. Offer a canned food diet to provide increased fluid intake. You can offer low sodium chicken broth or add some to your cat\u2019s water.
