While this chore may seem harmless, it can be the cause of a very serious pet danger: mothball toxicity. For pet owners who store their clothes with mothballs, it\u2019s important to take extra caution when switching out clothes and packing up items for storage. Most often, mothballs are placed with clothing and blankets in air-tight sealed containers to prevent fabric damage caused by clothes moths.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">If you\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0use mothballs, no need to start now! But for those who\u00a0choose to use them, know exactly what type of mothballs you are\u00a0purchasing. Read those\u00a0labels carefully and\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/npic.orst.edu\/ingred\/ptype\/mothball\/regulation.html\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">educate<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0yourself<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> on how to safely use them. Unfortunately, there is no antidote for\u00a0mothball\u00a0toxicity, but\u00a0prompt treatment\u00a0decreases the risk of severe poisoning. Treatment and prognosis vary, depending on the type of\u00a0mothball\u00a0and the amount eaten.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">To prevent\u00a0mothball\u00a0toxicity, store mothballs out of your pet\u2019s reach and in\u00a0airtight\u00a0containers. Always follow the product\u2019s labels and guidelines. Keep in mind that mothballs should never be placed in\u00a0an unsecured area, such as a closet or yard.
