A dog might be\u00a0triggered by\u00a0people who come to your door, but not\u00a0those\u00a0he meets outside. He\u00a0might be triggered by big dogs, small dogs, or cats wearing\u00a0roller-skates. Every dog is unique, and if your dog is reactive, I bet\u00a0you\u2019re\u00a0familiar\u00a0with his or her triggers. I\u00a0would also bet that if\u00a0you have\u00a0lived with your dog for\u00a0very long,\u00a0you\u2019re\u00a0also triggered by those things by now!<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Let me explain.\u00a0When we first got Polo, he was triggered by\u00a0doorbells. We\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0have a working doorbell, but if he heard one on TV,\u00a0he would get very agitated and start barking\u00a0and running from room to room.\u00a0Since I came to associate doorbells with my dog getting upset,\u00a0if I heard a doorbell &#8211; even at a friend\u2019s house or\u00a0in\u00a0a movie theater \u2013 my heart would start pounding,\u00a0and\u00a0I would brace for the barking dog.\u00a0A\u00a0moment\u00a0later I would\u00a0realize Polo\u00a0wasn\u2019t\u00a0there\u00a0and I\u00a0needn\u2019t\u00a0get upset!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-6265 aligncenter\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Untitled-design-2021-08-18T102155.689.png\" alt=\"resources, reactive dogs, reactive dog tips, reactive dogs advice, Animal Emergency &amp; Referral Center of Minnesota, pet health, pet safety, Twin Cities veterinary clinic, Twin Cities emergency vet\" width=\"800\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.aercmn.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Untitled-design-2021-08-18T102155.689.png 800w, https:\/\/www.aercmn.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Untitled-design-2021-08-18T102155.689-768x384.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<h4><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Resources<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Reactivity in dogs can be the result of a previous traumatic experience. Trauma causes hypervigilance, which means the dog is always nervous that something bad is going to happen. If you yourself have a history of trauma, then your dog\u2019s trauma can cause a similar hypervigilant response in your body.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Here are some things that helped me alleviate that response:<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"1\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Take breaks\u00a0from your dog<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0We got Polo during COVID, and I was working from home, so I never got away from him. Once we realized the strain this was placing on me, my husband\u00a0started taking\u00a0Polo to a\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sniffspot.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Sniffspot<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0(more\u00a0on\u00a0Sniffspots\u00a0in the next blog!) at least every other weekend so I\u00a0got dog-free time in my home.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233279&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559737&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"1\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"2\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Take breaks from training.<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0As I said in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aercmn.com\/blog\/reactivity-in-dogs-part-i-the-myth-of-the-good-dog\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">part 1<\/a> of this blog, I heaped the pressure of \u201cfixing\u201d Polo\u2019s reactivity all on myself. That led to exhaustion and burnout on training, and a damaged bond between me and Polo.\u00a0Realize that you\u00a0have\u00a0other responsibilities, including\u00a0self-care, and\u00a0your dog\u2019s\u00a0reactivity\u00a0isn\u2019t\u00a0going to be solved overnight.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233279&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559737&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"1\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"3\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Ask for help.\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Share the training burden with family members,\u00a0or you might start to resent that\u00a0you\u2019re\u00a0doing all the work. Even young children can\u00a0perform\u00a0simple training exercises or fill a puzzle toy for your dog. You do not have to do it all yourself!<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233279&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559737&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"1\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"4\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Wear noise-cancelling headphones to\u00a0ameliorate\u00a0the stress.<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0If your dog is reacting by barking, that takes a toll on your brain and body.\u00a0When I put\u00a0my headphones\u00a0on, I can feel my body relax because\u00a0I\u2019m\u00a0no longer\u00a0anticipating\u00a0Polo\u2019s bark.<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"1\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"4\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Talk to a professional.<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Even if you have a background in dog training, reactivity can be challenging to treat. My background of\u00a0over thirty years in veterinary medicine\u00a0didn\u2019t\u00a0prepare me for Polo! If you can afford the services of a\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vetbehaviormn.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">board-certified animal behaviorist<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, even one session can be\u00a0very helpful.\u00a0If\u00a0that\u2019s\u00a0out of the question,\u00a0talk to\u00a0your veterinarian.\u00a0It\u00a0may\u00a0be difficult to\u00a0modify\u00a0your dog\u2019s behavior\u00a0via\u00a0training\u00a0without medications to relieve anxiety, so\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0be afraid to inquire about those.\u00a0Lastly, a certified professional dog trainer can also be\u00a0very helpful.
