If your pet ingests explosive materials and debris and is experiencing vomiting, abdominal pain, and bloody diarrhea, this is considered an \u201cORANGE\u201d \u2013 or urgent case \u2013 on our Fast Track Triage system. Your pet should be seen by your family veterinarian or local animal emergency hospital within 12 hours. Please call ahead of your arrival so the veterinary team knows to expect you! If your pet ingested fireworks or explosives and is not experiencing symptoms, we recommend calling ASPCA Animal Poison Control at 888-426-4435 for help determining if your pet consumed a toxic amount and for guidance on what to do next. <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Since 1777, Americans have celebrated the Fourth of July with fireworks. This big, colorful, and loud tradition can be fun and for a lot of people, especially for some kids, it\u2019s an exciting and magical experience. But for our pets? Well, fireworks do a lot more harm than good. The truth is that many pet owners absolutely dread the Fourth of July holiday. For a variety of reasons, fireworks + pets = big trouble. We\u2019ll launch into the top three dangers in 3\u20262\u20261\u2026BOOM!<\/p>\n

Reason #3: Burns<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

Play with fire and someone will get burned. Unfortunately, our curious pets are often the victims while their humans are distracted.\u00a0<\/span>This may be obvious,<\/span>\u00a0but when pets get too close to lit explosives, they\u00a0<\/span>can<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>be<\/span>\u00a0seriously injured. Many pets experience burns to the face, inside the mouth, and on their\u00a0<\/span>paws, as well as eye irritation<\/span>\u00a0from the smoke<\/span>. If you choose to do any activities that involve<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>fireworks or anything that involves fire, do not let your pets join. Instead, keep them safe<\/span>ly<\/span>\u00a0inside<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Reason #2: Toxic<\/span>\u00a0Ingredients<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

Fireworks\u00a0<\/span>contain<\/span>\u00a0hazardous chemicals and heavy metals that are toxic to pets.\u00a0<\/span>S<\/span>ymptoms vary if your pet eats any part of a firework<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>whether used or unuse<\/span>d<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>and<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>can\u00a0<\/span>include vomiting, abdominal pain, bloody diarrhea, tremors, seizures, and kidney failure. If you suspect your pet ate any amount of an<\/span>y<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>firework<\/span>s<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0seek immediate veterinary care.\u00a0<\/span>A<\/span>nd\u00a0<\/span>if you\u00a0<\/span>plan to\u00a0<\/span>light any<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>type of\u00a0<\/span>firework<\/span>s<\/span>, keep your pets inside and\u00a0<\/span>thoroughly\u00a0<\/span>clean up the area before letting your pets<\/span>\u00a0back<\/span>\u00a0outside.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

To our pets<\/span>\u00a0though<\/span>, fireworks\u00a0<\/span>can be terrifying!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>More pets go missing on the Fourth of July than any other day of the year because they get scared and flee \u2013 whether\u00a0<\/span>they<\/span>‘<\/span>re<\/span>\u00a0at a fireworks display, in the backyard, or\u00a0<\/span>inside a house and\u00a0<\/span>break out<\/span>\u00a0(this happen<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0more often than you may think!)\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
