But what about exotic pets? If you do choose to\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW235092588 BCX0\">provide<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW235092588 BCX0\">\u00a0outdoor time,\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW235092588 BCX0\">the cooler\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW235092588 BCX0\">morning or evening<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW235092588 BCX0\">\u00a0hours will be safer.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW235092588 BCX0\">Keep in mind that while outside, your\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW235092588 BCX0\">small mammals<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW235092588 BCX0\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW235092588 BCX0\">are<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW235092588 BCX0\">\u00a0\u201cin nature,\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW235092588 BCX0\">meaning<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW235092588 BCX0\">\u00a0there could be predators lurking. Even in the city, there are owls and hawks<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW235092588 BCX0\">, so\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW235092588 BCX0\">it&#8217;<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW235092588 BCX0\">s<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW235092588 BCX0\">\u00a0always good practice to stay outside and keep a close eye on your pet during outdoor time.<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW235092588 BCX0\">\u00a0In addition,\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW235092588 BCX0\">it\u2019s<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW235092588 BCX0\">\u00a0important to\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW235092588 BCX0\">provide<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW235092588 BCX0\">\u00a0the security of a shelter\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW235092588 BCX0\">in which to hide<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW235092588 BCX0\">\u00a0if they feel scared or exposed.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW235092588 BCX0\">Here are a few more species-specific cautions to consider before bringing your pet outside:\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW235092588 BCX0\" data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:200,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"3\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Chinchillas have dense coats and are more prone to heat stress.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233279&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:200,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"3\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"2\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Chinchillas and guinea pigs are from the mountain ranges of South America. As such, they prefer cool, low-humidity weather.<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"3\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"2\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Keep guinea pigs in an enclosed area with access to both sunlight and shade.<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"3\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"2\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">An exercise pen, C&amp;C wire cages, or even plastic cubes that are zip-tied together are great options to keep your guinea pig safe. Put the enclosure in the (untreated) grass and let your guinea pig do what they want!<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"3\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"2\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">For even smaller mammals like hamsters and gerbils, keep them inside unless your pet is in a portable cage. In general, these types of species tend to run \u2013 especially hamsters! (Of course, every animal is different \u2013 you may very well have a tame hamster.) Typically, rats are very social creatures. If you walk around with your rat on your shoulder and have developed that special bond, you probably won\u2019t have to worry about the rat fleeing!<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"3\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"2\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">For sugar gliders, some pet owners do walk around\u00a0with\u00a0their\u00a0pet\u00a0in their shirt.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0best to have a special outdoor enclosure for your glider (like\u00a0a cat owner\u2019s \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/fb.watch\/5Lwesw9sQN\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">catio<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201d).\u00a0\u00a0Sugar gliders are nocturnal animals and prefer to sleep during the daytime though, so you don\u2019t need to worry about fun in the sun for them!<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"3\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"2\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Rabbit owners:\u00a0Rabbit Hemorrhagic\u00a0Disease (RHD) is quickly spreading around North America.\u00a0You can watch the replay of Dr. Bean\u2019s Facebook Live video on RHD\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/fb.watch\/5Lwi8avKNR\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">here<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0(note:\u00a0the video is from April of 2020), as well as a more recent update on RHD from\u00a0VINNews\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.vin.com\/default.aspx?pid=210&amp;Id=10226186&amp;fbclid=IwAR1cZ9intFdC9COoVOwCKO423exb8WktLNreJLhD8NjtakRbyFA1A3VpGGc\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">here<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> (May 2021).<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"3\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"2\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">For\u00a0indoor rabbits that\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0have air conditioning in the home, use\u00a0fans\u00a0on humid days\u00a0or\u00a0moisten your rabbit\u2019s ears with water. Bird owners can\u00a0simulate\u00a0this at home by leaving\u00a0the AC off\u00a0during the summer or cranking up the heat in the winter.\u00a0If you\u00a0can\u00a0do this, your bird will appreciate it!<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:200,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Some birds are well-bonded to their owner and will\u00a0ride\u00a0around on hands or shoulders. Outside though, this can be problematic for\u00a0obvious\u00a0safety reasons! If you do plan to keep your bird outside unsupervised, especially overnight, it\u2019s important to have a lot more security than a single-layer cage. Unfortunately, we have seen birds in our ER who were in an aviary overnight and animals like raccoons have grabbed them. Some species<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW142833111 BCX0\">,<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW142833111 BCX0\">\u00a0such as turtles and\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW142833111 BCX0\">tortoises,<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW142833111 BCX0\">\u00a0can be kept outside all day and all night during the summertime.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW142833111 BCX0\">Here are a few guidelines to follow for outdoor time with reptiles:\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW142833111 BCX0\" data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:200,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-leveltext=\"o\" data-font=\"Courier New\" data-listid=\"5\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Know the husbandry requirements for your pet\u2019s particular species\u00a0so\u00a0they get what they need while being housed outside.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233279&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:200,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"o\" data-font=\"Courier New\" data-listid=\"5\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"2\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">For some species, there are\u00a0additional\u00a0safety measurements to consider.\u00a0Some tortoises\u00a0enjoy\u00a0burrowing. We know\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0important to express these natural behaviors for the mental and emotional wellness of the pet. But if your tortoise\u00a0chooses\u00a0to\u00a0burrow\u00a0near the edge of\u00a0a\u00a0fence,\u00a0a\u00a0barrier\u00a0will be necessary\u00a0to\u00a0prevent the tortoise from getting out.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233279&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:200,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"o\" data-font=\"Courier New\" data-listid=\"5\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"3\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Risks of wildlife\u00a0encounters\u00a0also applies\u00a0for reptiles.\u00a0Therefore,\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0recommended to keep lizards\u00a0primarily\u00a0inside and only take them outside for supervised playtime.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233279&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:200,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"o\" data-font=\"Courier New\" data-listid=\"5\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"4\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">For chameleons, it\u2019s best to keep them inside! Yes, they can be in tropical areas, but this species is very precise about their husbandry and preferred temperature range. Chameleons stress very easily so changing things up on them and taking them outside could throw them off and make them sick.
