We know this Thanksgiving will look different for many families. As you prepare Thanksgiving dinner at home (or put out the takeout food from a local restaurant or catering company), your dog and cat may be eager to join the Thanksgiving feast. But don\u2019t give in to the puppy eyes and begging without first knowing which foods are safe for them to eat.<\/p>\n
Many foods that we enjoy at Thanksgiving can cause mild to severe problems for our furry, four-legged family members. As with treats, feed these special snacks in small amounts rather than heaping helpings. Here is a list of common Thanksgiving foods that are safe for pets (in moderation!), and a list of foods that should never be given to your furry pal.<\/p>\n

Chewing and swallowing\u00a0<\/span>any meat\u00a0<\/span>bones can cause\u00a0<\/span>gastrointestinal<\/span>\u00a0upset<\/span>, small intestinal obstructions<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>and\/or\u00a0<\/span>damage to the teeth and\u00a0gums<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n T<\/span>hese are high in fat and can cause gastrointestinal upset and\/or\u00a0<\/span>pancreatitis<\/span><\/a>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n G<\/span>arlic and\u00a0<\/span>onions<\/span>, as well as leeks and chives,<\/span>\u00a0can be toxic to pets<\/span>. These foods\u00a0cause\u00a0stomach upset and destruction of the red bl<\/span>ood cells in the body if a toxic amount is eaten.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n P<\/span>ork products are higher in fat than poultry and have\u00a0<\/span>an\u00a0<\/span>increase<\/span>d<\/span>\u00a0risk of causing gastrointestinal upset and\/or\u00a0<\/span>pancreatitis<\/span><\/a>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n E<\/span>ating the increased fat contents in butter or oil can cause gastrointestinal upset and\/or\u00a0<\/span>pancreatitis<\/span><\/a>. Leave this off the bread or potatoes\u00a0<\/span>if\u00a0<\/span>they are\u00a0<\/span>shared!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n A<\/span>lthough corn is no<\/span>n-<\/span>toxic,\u00a0<\/span>corn on the cob<\/span><\/a>\u00a0<\/span>is<\/span>\u00a0very hazardous.\u00a0<\/span>Pieces of cob<\/span>\u00a0can cause a\u00a0<\/span>gastrointestinal\u00a0<\/span>obstruction which requires an endoscopy or even surgery to remove the cob from the stomach and intestines.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Nuts<\/span><\/a>\u00a0are too fatty (and in most cases, too salty) for pets. They are high in calories and can cause\u00a0<\/span>pancreatitis<\/span><\/a>. Additionally, macadamia nuts are toxic to dogs and can cause them to\u00a0<\/span>vomit,\u00a0<\/span>experience tremors,<\/span>\u00a0become<\/span>\u00a0lethargic<\/span>, weak, or unable to\u00a0<\/span>walk<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>And\u00a0<\/span>although rare, cats\u00a0<\/span>who<\/span>\u00a0eat<\/span>\u00a0almonds can\u00a0<\/span>develop<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>cyanide poisoning.<\/span><\/p>\n Common fall\u00a0<\/span>spices<\/span><\/a>\u00a0used in baked goods, foods, and beverages can be dangerous to our pets<\/span>. Nutmeg\u00a0<\/span>can cause hallucinations, disorientation, increased heart rate, high blood pressure, abdominal pain, and seizures. Cloves and allspice can cause vomiting, numbness, and walking \u201cdrunk\u201d, as well as liver toxicity in cats.\u00a0<\/span>In large amounts, cinnamon\u00a0<\/span>can cause vomiting, diarrhea, low blood sugar, irritation\u00a0<\/span>to your pet\u2019s mouth<\/span>, changes in heart rate, and liver issues.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n S<\/span>ome pumpkin pie mixes\u00a0contain\u00a0<\/span>added\u00a0<\/span>spices<\/span><\/a>\u00a0<\/span>and\u00a0<\/span>xylitol<\/span><\/a>, a\u00a0<\/span>sugarless sweetener\u00a0<\/span>that can cause low blood sugar, liver damage, and seizures\u00a0<\/span>if eaten by pets.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n
