Her owners were away at work, and a brother-in-law who lived with them was at home, performing maintenance on a firearm. \u00a0The gun accidentally discharged, hitting Riley in the chest. Without delay, the brother-in-law brought her to AERC, and her owners left work to be with Riley at our hospital. When they arrived, they approved all of the emergency care that our team recommended for Riley.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-4752 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aercmn.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Untitled-design-2020-06-22T200308.728.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.aercmn.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Untitled-design-2020-06-22T200308.728.png 800w, https:\/\/www.aercmn.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Untitled-design-2020-06-22T200308.728-768x384.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<h4>Riley&#8217;s Treatment<\/h4>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4753 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aercmn.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Riley-rads-1-254x300.jpg\" alt=\"radiographs, x-ray, imaging, puppy, recovering, stories of animal survival, pet health, veterinary stories, veterinary ER stories, emergency vet, emergency veterinary clinic, emergency animal hospital, gunshot wound dog, dog health, critical care, AERC Critical Care, AERC Emergency Service, Animal Emergency &amp; Referral Center of Minnesota, Fur-Tunately\" width=\"254\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Riley was in critical condition upon her arrival, and our team stabilized her with IV fluids, oxygen support, pain medications, and antibiotics. Radiographs showed the bullet had passed through the left side of her chest, causing extensive damage to her lungs and fracturing several ribs.<\/p>\n<p><em>In the radiograph on the right, the red circle shows the broken ribs. The green circle shows increased whiteness to the lungs which indicates pulmonary contusions (bruising to the lung).<\/em><\/p>\n<p>One of Riley\u2019s lung lobes was punctured and needed to be surgically removed, so Riley went into emergency surgery. A temporary chest tube was placed to help drain any air, blood, or fluid that may accumulate after surgery. Then, she was moved to AERC\u2019s Intensive Care Unit (ICU) where she received a blood transfusion, oxygen support, IV pain medications, IV antibiotics, and chest tube care. She is enjoying running and playing with the other dogs in the house.
