Also, don\u2019t leave pantry doors open. Remind all house guests not to feed your pet any table scraps. Foods that are toxic to pets: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aercmn.com\/blog\/alcohol-poisoning-in-pets\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">alcoholic beverages<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aercmn.com\/blog\/why-is-chocolate-toxic-to-my-dog\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">chocolate<\/a>, coffee beans, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aercmn.com\/blog\/can-my-pet-eat-nuts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">macadamia nuts<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aercmn.com\/blog\/compost-garbage-and-mold-oh-my\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">moldy or spoiled foods<\/a>, onions, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aercmn.com\/blog\/grape-and-raisin-toxicity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">raisins and grapes<\/a>, salt, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aercmn.com\/blog\/no-bread-dough-for-fido\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">yeast dough<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>\n<h5>Secure Inside\/Outside Trash Cans<\/h5>\n<p>Speaking of not leaving food around, this includes inside the trash can. Pets can dig their noses into trash and eat <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aercmn.com\/blog\/compost-garbage-and-mold-oh-my\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">moldy<\/a>, expired food. Pet owners can prevent this by keeping all trash in sealed, contained trash cans or bins.<\/li>\n<li>\n<h5>Houseplants<\/h5>\n<p>Many <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aercmn.com\/blog\/common-plants-that-are-toxic-to-pets\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">common houseplants<\/a> or flowers are toxic to your pets, especially cats. Before bringing any plant into your home, make sure it is pet-friendly by using the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aspca.org\/pet-care\/animal-poison-control\/toxic-and-non-toxic-plants\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ASPCA Toxic and Non-Toxic Plant Guide<\/a>. One of the biggest dangers are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aercmn.com\/blog\/understanding-the-toxicity-of-lilies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">lilies<\/a> &#8211; they can cause kidney failure in cats and even the smallest nibble can be fatal. Don\u2019t leave any medication unattended on the counter, lying in a purse or bag, or in an easy-access cupboard.<\/li>\n<li>\n<h5>Cleaning Supplies<\/h5>\n<p>Keep all <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aercmn.com\/blog\/spring-cleaning-part-i-keeping-your-pets-safe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cleaning supplies<\/a> in a cupboard that cannot be opened by your pet. To be safe, you can use a child-proof lock.<\/li>\n<li>\n<h5>Ice Melt<\/h5>\n<p>After your dog goes outside in the winter, make sure you wipe off his\/her paws before coming back inside. Get all of the ice melt salt off of your dog\u2019s paws. If he\/she licks his paws without being cleaned, there is a chance of poisoning.<\/li>\n<li>\n<h5>Common Household Items<\/h5>\n<p>Many common items found around the house can poison your pet. Keep your pet away from the contaminated area.<\/li>\n<li>\n<h5>Automotive Products<\/h5>\n<p>Keep car necessities such as gasoline, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aercmn.com\/blog\/antifreeze-poisoning-in-pets\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">antifreeze<\/a>, oil, etc\u2026 on high shelves in the garage to save your pet from accidentally licking up a spill.<\/li>\n<li>\n<h5>Pest Control<\/h5>\n<p>If you use any <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aercmn.com\/blog\/autumn-hazards-for-pets-rat-and-mouse-poisons\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rodenticides<\/a>, keep them out of your pet\u2019s reach. Make sure your pet cannot access any traps that you set around the house. Lily of the valley, oleander, rhododendron, azalea, yew, and foxglove can affect your pet\u2019s heart. Rhubarb leaves and certain species of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aercmn.com\/blog\/save-a-cat-this-spring\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">lilies<\/a> can cause kidney failure. Cycads and some species of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aercmn.com\/blog\/mushroom-toxicity-in-pets\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mushrooms<\/a> can cause liver failure.<\/li>\n<li>\n<h5>Chemical Treatments<\/h5>\n<p>If you use any chemicals on your lawn or garden, keep your pets away from the area.
