Please call ahead of your arrival so the veterinary team knows to expect you!<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<hr style=\"width: 100%;\" size=\"3\" \/>\n<p><strong>What is a heart murmur?<\/strong><br \/>\nA heart murmur is an abnormal sound that a veterinarian may discover when listening to your pet\u2019s heartbeat with a stethoscope. This sound is a result of a disturbed blood flow within the heart, the aorta, or the pulmonary artery.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What does a \u201csoft\u201d or \u201cloud\u201d heart murmur mean?<\/strong><br \/>\nIf your veterinarian hears a murmur, he\/she will grade it according to this scale from I to VI based on the murmur\u2019s audibility:<br \/>\n<strong><em>Grade I:<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0barely audible<br \/>\n<em><strong>Grade II:<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0soft<br \/>\n<em><strong>Grade III:<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0intermediate loudness<br \/>\n<em><strong>Grade IV:<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0loud murmur that radiates widely<br \/>\n<em><strong>Grade V:<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0very loud<br \/>\n<em><strong>Grade VI:<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0extremely loud<\/p>\n<p><strong>What does it mean that my puppy was diagnosed with an \u201cinnocent murmur\u201d?\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\nIf your pet is a young puppy or kitten with a Grade I or II murmur, it is most likely an \u201cinnocent murmur\u201d. These types of murmurs appear when your pet is 6-8 weeks old and usually by the time your pet is 4-6 months old, he\/she will outgrow the murmur. This is very common in large breed puppies as they are growing.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-7639 aligncenter\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Untitled-design-2022-09-23T105339.933.png\" alt=\"heart murmur, veterinary cardiology, board-certified veterinary cardiologist, Animal Emergency &amp; Referral Center of Minnesota, Twin Cities veterinary cardiologist, Minnesota veterinary cardiologist, pet's heart health, pet cardiology\" width=\"800\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.aercmn.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Untitled-design-2022-09-23T105339.933.png 800w, https:\/\/www.aercmn.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Untitled-design-2022-09-23T105339.933-768x384.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>What are signs to look out for if a murmur becomes a more serious issue?<\/strong><br \/>\nMurmurs can be benign or they can be early signs of congestive heart failure. \u00a0If your pet has a heart murmur, these are the early warning signs of heart disease to watch for:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Coughing<\/li>\n<li>Changes in breathing\u2013labored or rapid breathing<\/li>\n<li>Changes in sleep posture<\/li>\n<li>Shortness of breath<\/li>\n<li>Lack of energy\/tires easily\/lethargy<\/li>\n<li>Exercise intolerance<\/li>\n<li>Fainting<\/li>\n<li>Restlessness, especially at night<\/li>\n<li>Changes in appetite<\/li>\n<li>Sensitivity to heat or cold<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>What are the causes of CHF?<\/strong><br \/>\nCommon causes of CHF include: old age, injury, infection, unbalanced diet, lack of exercise. Other pets may be born with heart defects.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What can I do to keep an eye on my pet\u2019s heart murmur at home?\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\nAsk your veterinarian to teach you how to track your pet\u2019s resting respiratory rate (RRR) at home. This way, if your pet\u2019s condition changes, you can notify the veterinarian right away. A change in breathing rate could be the earliest sign of congestive heart failure.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Have your veterinarian establish a baseline.<\/li>\n<li>Monitor weekly once pet has cardiac enlargement.<\/li>\n<li>Rate should be less than 30 breaths per minute.<\/li>\n<li>Keep a diary or use the RRR app (available at\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.yourdogsheart.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">www.yourdogsheart.com<\/a>\u00a0or on the app stores for iPhone\u00ae or Android\u2122 Smartphones)<\/li>\n<li>Have your veterinarian provide you with your RRR (usually less than 30 breaths\/minute) or a percentage increase from baseline (usually &gt;20% for 6+ hours), so they know when to bring in their dog for a heart examination.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-7640 aligncenter\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Untitled-design-2022-09-23T104635.944.png\" alt=\"heart murmur, veterinary cardiology, board-certified veterinary cardiologist, Animal Emergency &amp; Referral Center of Minnesota, Twin Cities veterinary cardiologist, Minnesota veterinary cardiologist, pet's heart health, pet cardiology\" width=\"800\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.aercmn.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Untitled-design-2022-09-23T104635.944.png 800w, https:\/\/www.aercmn.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Untitled-design-2022-09-23T104635.944-768x384.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Now what?<\/strong><br \/>\nYour veterinarian will be able to diagnosis your pet after looking into his\/her medical history, performing a physical examination, listening to your pet\u2019s heart and lungs, taking x-rays, and running additional tests.
