Techs advocate for their patients and are sensitive to their needs. The vet techs that I know are hard-working, eager to learn, and passionate about helping animals. Vet techs are wonderful multitaskers, and most are able to do double-duty in nearly every role of the veterinary hospital.<\/p>\n<p>As a veterinary technician myself at the\u00a0<a href=\"\/blog\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Animal Emergency and Referral Center of Minnesota<\/a>, I can tell you that we have a plethora of roles within the practice: \u00a0 \u202c\u202c\u202c\u202c\u202c<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>We draw blood samples and give blood transfusions\u202c\u202c\u202c\u202c\u202c<\/li>\n<li>We place IV catheters, urinary catheters, and central lines\u202c\u202c\u202c\u202c\u202c<\/li>\n<li>\u202aWe set up all different types of bloodwork\u202c\u202c\u202c\u202c\u202c<\/li>\n<li>We take radiographs, prepare the endoscope for use, and run the CT s\u202ccanner\u202c\u202c\u202c<\/li>\n<li>We make sure our patients receive the high-quality care they need whether they are furry, scaly, or feathered\u202c\u202c\u202c\u202c\u202c<\/li>\n<li>\u202aWe give physical therapy and medications\u202c\u202c\u202c\u202c\u202c<\/li>\n<li>\u202aWe educate clients and help them to better care for their pets\u202c\u202c\u202c\u202c\u202c<\/li>\n<li>We clean patients\u2019 teeth and assist with dental surgeries\u202c\u202c\u202c\u202c\u202c<\/li>\n<li>We monitor anesthesia and scrub in to help veterinarians within the operating room\u202c\u202c\u202c<\/li>\n<li>\u202aWe clean, stock drawers, and inventory\u202c supplies\u202c\u202c\u202c<\/li>\n<li>We answer phones, triage patients, and enter treatments into the computer \u202c\u202c<\/li>\n<li>We give end-of-life care to pets and treat them with respect when they\u2019ve passed away\u202c\u202c\u202c<\/li>\n<li>\u202aWe provide grieving families a shoulder to cry on, and we feel their pain \u202c\u202c\u202c<\/li>\n<li>\u202aWe cry our own tears behind the scenes for your pet and your family\u202c\u202c\u202c\u202c\u202c<\/li>\n<li>\u202aWe suffer bites and scratches for pets that need life-saving care but think they don\u2019t\u202c\u202c\u202c<\/li>\n<li>We catch urine for urinalyses, dig through vomit looking for foreign bodies, and clean up diarrhea\u202c\u202c\u202c\u202c\u202c<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u202aAs a veterinary technician working in the Emergency and Critical Care Department, I love my job and could not imagine doing anything else.\u00a0With all these different tasks to do, I have a lot of variety in my day-to-day shifts.\u00a0Every shift is different, and I have many opportunities to be a part of advanced procedures.
