Last year, I stopped shopping online at national chain stores in favor of shopping at small, local businesses. Other than having to leave the cozy warmth of my house, shopping local was no sacrifice. We are fortunate to have many great shopping options in the Twin Cities. We even have stores that will allow you to bring your furry family member along for the experience.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-7936 aligncenter\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/6.png\" alt=\"holiday shopping, shopping with dogs, shopping with pets, pet-friendly stores, Animal Emergency &amp; Referral Center of Minnesota\" width=\"800\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.aercmn.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/6.png 800w, https:\/\/www.aercmn.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/6-768x384.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Prior to your shopping odyssey with Fido, however, you\u2019ll want to consider the following factors:<\/p>\n<p><strong>1. Size of Dog vs. Size of Shop\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\nEver heard the phrase \u201cbull in a china shop\u201d? If you\u2019ve ever taken an exuberant Golden Retriever into an antique store, you\u2019ll get my drift. Let\u2019s face facts: there are some shops that will not mix well with some dogs. You Break It, You Buy It<\/strong><br \/>\nYour pet may require a higher level of control when inside a retail store or a restaurant. Use what you usually do to accomplish a calm(er) dog: head collar, harness, bungee leash, or whatever works for you. A flexi-leash is not usually a good choice for such an outing; your leash should be six feet or shorter to allow for maximum control. While the Midwest isn\u2019t known for people carrying purse dogs, if the purse is large and comfortable and doesn\u2019t contain anything harmful to your pet, we\u2019re not opposed to putting a small dog in a large purse or bag.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-7940 aligncenter\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/2.png\" alt=\"holiday shopping, shopping with dogs, shopping with pets, pet-friendly stores, Animal Emergency &amp; Referral Center of Minnesota\" width=\"800\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.aercmn.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/2.png 800w, https:\/\/www.aercmn.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/2-768x384.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>4. Baby, It\u2019s Cold Outside<\/strong><br \/>\nIf your dog is any of the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>cold-sensitive<\/li>\n<li>very thin<\/li>\n<li>geriatric<\/li>\n<li>very young<\/li>\n<li>short-coated<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>and the temperature is below freezing, it\u2019s better to leave your companion at home if he or she will have to spend more than ten or fifteen minutes waiting for you in an unheated vehicle.
