This may seem like a natural fit, especially for dogs that love jumping off the dock into the cool, semi-opaque water to chase after a ball.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1808 alignright\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/photo1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"249\" height=\"128\" \/>The rapidly growing sport of dock diving trains dogs to run the length of a dock and leap out into a clear pool of water to chase their \u201cprey\u201d. For about 95% of the dogs who try dock diving, their natural abilities at the lake or river are a great starting point. However, it takes time for them to make the leap of faith from the lake to learning to jump into a 60 degree pool of water that looks like a clear, bottomless pit.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1809 alignright\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/photos2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"111\" height=\"102\" \/>Dock diving requires training and patience for both the dog\u00a0<em>and the handler<\/em>. \u00a0According to Steve Powell, owner of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.thedogtank.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Dog Tank<\/a>\u00a0in\u00a0 Menonomie, WI, the artificial environment of dock diving is a different picture for the dog than a lake with weeds and ducks. As a handler, you may have to retrain your dog\u2019s behavior. \u00a0But once you do, it\u2019s a great way to have fun with your dog.<\/p>\n<p>If you think dock diving is something you\u2019d like to try with your dog, there are a few key things to know about your dog:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You need to have a dog that is motivated to chase or retrieve something.<\/li>\n<li>You need to have a dog that likes to swim and isn\u2019t afraid of getting wet.<\/li>\n<li>It helps to have a toy motivated dog as you can\u2019t throw treats into the pool<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1806 alignright\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/photos3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"210\" height=\"99\" \/>Once the winter chills have truly left our area, there are many portable \u201ctry-it\u201d events throughout the summer you can attend and work with professional trainers to determine if this is a sport for your dog.
