Both of these ingredients are toxic to dogs. Instead of Halloween candy, help your dog celebrate Halloween safely with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aercmn.com\/blog\/a-baking-guide-to-homemade-dog-treats\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">homemade pet treats<\/a>! These treats have the benefit of being preservative-free and can be made into a variety of festive shapes. \u00a0Unfortunately, these treats should not be offered to pets with food allergies.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.akc.org\/content\/health\/articles\/easy-to-make-pumpkin-recipes-for-dogs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Peanut Butter and Pumpkin Dog Treats<\/a>\u00a0(<em>Recipe from American Kennel Club<\/em>)<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>Ingredients:<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>2 \u00bd cups whole wheat flour<\/li>\n<li>2 eggs<\/li>\n<li>\u00bd cup canned pumpkin<\/li>\n<li>2 tablespoons peanut butter<\/li>\n<li>\u00bd teaspoon salt<\/li>\n<li>\u00bd teaspoon ground cinnamon<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Instructions:<\/em><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Preheat oven to 350\u00b0F.<\/li>\n<li>Whisk together the flour, eggs, pumpkin, peanut butter, salt and cinnamon in a bowl. \u00a0Add water as needed to help make the dough workable, but the dough should be dry and stiff.<\/li>\n<li>Roll the dough into a \u00bd inch thick roll.<\/li>\n<li>Cut into \u00bd inch pieces and shape as desired.<\/li>\n<li>Bake in preheated oven until hard, about 40 minutes.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5318 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aercmn.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Untitled-design-2020-09-17T151948.281.png\" alt=\"dog, hot dog costume, dog-friendly Halloween, dog Halloween party, Halloween safety, Halloween activities for dogs, dog Halloween activities, pet Halloween costumes, pet Halloween treats, Animal Emergency &amp; Referral Center of Minnesota, pet safety, Twin Cities emergency vet, Minnesota animal emergency hospital\" width=\"800\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.aercmn.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Untitled-design-2020-09-17T151948.281.png 800w, https:\/\/www.aercmn.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Untitled-design-2020-09-17T151948.281-768x384.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Pet Costumes<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In reality, pet costumes are usually more fun for the humans involved than the pets. \u00a0Here are some guidelines to minimize stress for your furry companion as he parades around in his costume.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Make sure there are not parts of the costume that can be chewed off or eaten.<\/li>\n<li>Avoid glow sticks. \u00a0While the material is not toxic, it tastes very bad. \u00a0If he chews open a glow stick, your pet will likely become distressed and drool excessively.<\/li>\n<li>Choose a costume that does not cover the pet\u2019s eyes, ears, nose or mouth.<\/li>\n<li>Get a costume that fits appropriately; not too big or too small.<\/li>\n<li>Give your pet time to get used to the costume. \u00a0Have your pet wear the costume for a few minutes every day for about a week before Halloween.
