Please call ahead of your arrival so the veterinary team knows to expect you! <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #f99d1c;\"> If you witnessed or strongly suspect your pet ingested toxic cleaning supplies, this is considered an \u201cORANGE\u201d \u2013 or urgent case \u2013 on our Fast Track Triage system. We recommend calling ASPCA Animal Poison Control at 888-426-4435 for help determining if your pet consumed a toxic amount and for guidance on what to do next. If veterinary care is advised, call your family veterinarian or local animal emergency hospital ahead of your arrival. <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<hr style=\"width: 100%;\" size=\"3\" \/>\n<p>As the weather warms up, many of us take the opportunity to deep clean, paint, or organize around the house. \u00a0Many cleaning products, even \u201cnatural\u201d ones, can be toxic. \u00a0The risk for exposure to pets is high. \u00a0Any cleaner that they come in contact with may be ingested through self-grooming. \u00a0Pets have a natural curiosity, and unfortunately, they can\u2019t read warning labels!<\/p>\n<p>At the ER, I have treated pets that have eaten household toxins and developed skin irritation, suffered from chemical burns, or developed respiratory difficulty from fumes or airborne irritants. Read the labels.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It may seem simple enough, but many of us buy or use products without reading the labels beforehand. \u00a0Many products will provide safety instructions for us that apply to pets as well. Use that information! \u00a0Know that bleach, phenols, ammonia, formaldehyde, perchloroethylene, highly acidic or highly alkaline products are all more dangerous for our pets. Also, natural doesn\u2019t always mean safe. \u00a0Did you know that ingestion of significant amounts of baking soda can cause serious medical issues?<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-6970 aligncenter\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Untitled-design-21.png\" alt=\"pet safety, pet toxins, cleaning supplies, spring cleaning, pet owners cleaning tips, cleaning safety for pet owners, pet health, Animal Emergency &amp; Referral Center of Minnesota, emergency vet\" width=\"800\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.aercmn.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Untitled-design-21.png 800w, https:\/\/www.aercmn.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Untitled-design-21-768x384.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>2. Avoid exposure.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Keep your pet in a room far away while you are cleaning. \u00a0You don\u2019t want your cat or dog walking over a floor wet with cleaning products! \u00a0Open windows to allow fumes to escape; in particular, oven cleaners can produce fumes that are dangerous. Be aware that birds, cats, and small exotic pets are especially susceptible to respiratory difficulties associated with aerosols and fumes. Safe storage.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Toilet bowl cleaner doesn\u2019t sound tasty to me, but your Labrador Retriever may be willing to try anything once! \u00a0Keep those bottles of cleaners in a closet, a high shelf, or out in the garage where your pet can\u2019t be tempted.\u00a0If they must be kept in a lower cabinet, install child locks.<\/p>\n<p>If your pet has ingested or had other exposure to a cleaning product, contact\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aspca.org\/pet-care\/animal-poison-control\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ASPCA Poison Control<\/a>\u00a0at (888) 426-4435 to determine if treatment is necessary.
