But when it does happen, what can you do to bring your pet home? In Minnesota, we&#8217;re lucky to have The Retrievers to help.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1421 alignright\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/dog-1151195-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/theretrievers.org\/\">The Retrievers<\/a> is an independent, volunteer-based organization located in St.\u00a0Paul, Minnesota that provides lost dog support services (tips, tools, consultations, and resources) for pet owners and rescues. Here&#8217;s the process they recommend to pet owners:<\/p>\n<p><strong>How can The Retrievers help find your missing dog?<\/strong>\u00a0Here\u2019s the process they recommend to pet owners:<\/p>\n<p><strong>1.<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Immediate Response:<\/strong>\u00a0The minutes and hours immediately following a dog\u2019s disappearance are critical.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Recruit friends, family, and neighbors to help search the area for your dog.<\/li>\n<li>Call local animal shelters, animal control agencies,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/spreadsheets\/d\/1K--sPTQJpNMyGtQ5dvNt0xl2uynR9RANfpzPOxFDvzk\/edit?pref=2&amp;pli=1#gid=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">impound facilities<\/a>,\u00a0and 24\/7 animal hospitals to let them know your dog is missing and to notify you if there are any sightings.<\/li>\n<li>Find more tips for immediate action,\u00a0including how to use scent articles to help find your dog,\u00a0<a href=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/TheRetrievers_ActionPlan.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>2.<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Contact The Retrievers:<\/strong>\u00a0They offer free consultations, tips, support, and encouragement on an as-needed basis for every pet owner that loses a dog, including dog owners outside of Minnesota.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3.<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Raise Awareness:\u00a0<\/strong>The more people that know your dog is missing, the more eyes you<\/p>\n<p>have looking for him\/her.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1422 alignright\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/12718338_486455684894930_6173989743344696630_n-238x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"238\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Spread the word about your missing pet.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/theretrievers.org\/resources\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Create flyers<\/a>\u00a0and online posts that include: photos of your dog, a description of your dog (gender, age, breed, coat color, eye color, collar color, and if your dog is microchipped), your contact information, and any important notes about your dog\u2019s behavior (ex: if your dog is timid or aggressive).<\/li>\n<li>Place big, bright signs and flyers at intersections around your area. Use\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/theretrievers.org\/using-google-maps\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Google Maps<\/a>\u00a0to help organize your flyer placement.<\/li>\n<li>Post information online such as on your personal Facebook page and community pages (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/TheRetrieversLostDogTeam\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Retrievers<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/LDoMN\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lost Dogs Minnesota<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/findfido\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lost Dogs Wisconsin<\/a>, etc&#8230;). You can also set up a Facebook group dedicated to searching for your lost dog. For example, Buddy\u2019s family set up this\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/RetrievingBuddy\/photos\/a.483628648510967.1073741828.483623598511472\/486455684894930\/?type=3&amp;theater\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Retrieving Buddy<\/a>\u00a0Facebook page\u00a0to get more people looking for him and to post updates.\u00a0<em>Please note: Buddy is still missing! Please keep an eye out for him if you are in the Twin Cities area!\u00a0<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Continuously check in with local shelters, humane societies, animal hospitals, impounds, animal control,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/spreadsheets\/d\/1K--sPTQJpNMyGtQ5dvNt0xl2uynR9RANfpzPOxFDvzk\/edit?pref=2&amp;pli=1#gid=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">impound facilities<\/a>,\u00a0lost dog Facebook group,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/findfido\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Craigslist<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.findtoto.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Find Toto<\/a>, and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.petamberalert.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">PetAmberAlert<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>4.\u00a0Humane Capture of Skittish Dogs:<\/strong>\u00a0Volunteers with The Retrievers are trained in humanely catching lost dogs.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If there is a general area or sighting of the dog, call The Retrievers. They\u2019ll set up a \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/theretrievers.org\/resources\/missy-trap\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">trap<\/a>\u201d to help contain the loose dog and reunite him\/her with the family. Read\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/m.startribune.com\/lost-dog-nonprofit-retrievers-ride-to-the-rescue\/368706361\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Toby\u2019s story<\/a>\u00a0to learn how The Retrievers set up a trap using his brother&#8217;s scent.<\/li>\n<li>If you spot a loose dog in your neighborhood, try to track down the owner before calling The Retrievers. They will not capture a dog unless they have a commitment from you that the dog will have a place to stay once it leaves the trap.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>5.\u00a0Lost Dog Education:\u00a0<\/strong>A moment\u2019s carelessness or the wrong fit for a collar can result in a loose dog.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Make sure your dog has a proper fitting collar, ID tags, and is microchipped. Keep information up-to-date. Learn why it&#8217;s important to have both ID tags and a microchip\u00a0<a href=\"\/blog\/national-pet-id-week\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>The Retrievers offer prevention education to decrease the amount of lost dogs each year. Here is data from The Retrievers\u2019 2015 Annual Report and 2019 Annual Report:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-1418 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aercmn.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/2015-the-retrievers-1-1024x566.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"566\" \/><br \/>\nIn 2015, The Retrievers had 201 total cases. 118 dogs were returned to their owners, rescues, or caregivers.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-4763 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aercmn.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/82481823_1549724045189911_5136793251226845184_o-1024x566.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"566\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In 2019, The Retrievers had 707 total cases. Over 450 dogs were returned to their owners, rescues, or caregivers.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-1419 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aercmn.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/2015-the-retrievers-2-1024x566.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"566\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In 2015, for dogs that returned safely,\u00a088 of The Retrievers&#8217; cases were hand-caught by people not associated with The Retrievers. 14 cases were trapped by The Retrievers. 17 dogs were found in a shelter.\u00a0Most dogs were missing for either 12-48 hours or 3-14 days.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-4764 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aercmn.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/82926624_1549724061856576_4282328671831719936_o-1024x566.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"566\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In 2019, for dogs that returned safely, 274 of The Retrievers&#8217; cases were hand-caught by people not associated with The Retrievers. 57 cases were trapped by The Retrievers. 7 dogs were found in a shelter.
