If veterinary care is advised, call your family veterinarian or local animal emergency hospital ahead of your arrival.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<hr style=\"width: 100%;\" size=\"3\" \/>\n<p>It\u2019s Pumpkin Spice season! Lattes, beers, baked goods, ice creams, snack foods, syrups, and more! While it\u2019s okay for humans to go on a pumpkin spice craze, we ask that you refrain from having your pets join. In fact, 100% pure pumpkin may have health benefits for your pets. If your pet eats <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aercmn.com\/blog\/can-my-pet-eat-pumpkin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pumpkin<\/a>, it causes stomach upset, especially diarrhea. This is why pumpkin is recommended for constipated pets. Before you give your pet pumpkin anything, talk to your family veterinarian.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Side note:<\/em><\/strong> When purchasing canned pumpkin for your homemade dog treats, make sure it is pure! Check the label for 100% pure canned pumpkin and be sure there are no spices or xylitol in the ingredients!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5290 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aercmn.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/7.png\" alt=\"pumpkin spice, pet safety, pet health, pet toxins, cinnamon, nutmeg, pumpkin, cloves, pumpkin spice baked goods, pumpkin spice coffee, pet safety, Animal Emergency &amp; Referral Center of Minnesota, emergency vet, Twin Cities emergency vet, Minnesota emergency vet\" width=\"800\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.aercmn.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/7.png 800w, https:\/\/www.aercmn.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/7-768x384.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<h4><strong>2.\u00a0\u00a0Spices<\/strong><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h5><strong>Cinnamon<\/strong><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>If your pet eats a dash of cinnamon, it won\u2019t harm him. If your pet eats a large quantity of cinnamon, however, it could be dangerous. Also, if your pet inhales cinnamon powder, it can cause coughing, choking, difficulty breathing, and bronchospasm.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Symptoms:<\/strong>\u00a0Vomiting, diarrhea, lowered blood sugar, irritation of the mouth and lungs, changes in heart rate, and liver issues.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h5><strong>Nutmeg<\/strong><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>Nutmeg contains a toxin called Myristicin. Therefore, nutmeg is very toxic to pets. Seek veterinary help immediately if your pet eats nutmeg.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Symptoms:<\/strong>\u00a0Hallucinations, disorientation, increased heart rate, high blood pressure, dry mouth, abdominal pain, and possibly seizures. Symptoms can last up to 48 hours.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<h5><strong>Cloves and Allspice<\/strong><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>These ingredients contain eugenol which is toxic to pets. Eugenol is also found in essential oils. Eugenol may cause an allergic reaction if the oil form is applied to your pet.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Symptoms:<\/strong>\u00a0Vomiting, numbness, walking \u201cdrunk\u201d. Liver toxicity in cats.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<h5><strong>Ginger<\/strong><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>Ginger is not considered toxic. Sometimes, ginger is given to dogs to prevent nausea. Dried ginger root can cause diarrhea. If you plan to give your pets ginger, only do so in small amounts and not too often! Baked Goods<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Pumpkin baked goods may contain other toxic items such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aercmn.com\/blog\/xylitol-its-not-so-sweet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">xylitol<\/a> (a sugarless sweetener), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aercmn.com\/blog\/grape-and-raisin-toxicity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">raisins<\/a>, currants, macadamia nuts, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aercmn.com\/blog\/why-is-chocolate-toxic-to-my-dog\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">chocolate<\/a>. Dairy<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Pets are lactose-intolerant and they can also have dairy allergies. Yogurts, ice cream, and other milk-based foods can cause stomach upset in pets. While a small amount of vanilla ice cream or yogurt mixed into a homemade treat is usually safe, refrain from giving your pets large amounts of any <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aercmn.com\/blog\/can-i-give-my-dog-and-cat-dairy-products\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">dairy product<\/a>. Lattes and other coffeehouse beverages contain caffeine which is toxic to pets; caffeine contains theobromine which is also toxic to pets. Even a small amount of alcohol can be dangerous to our fur babies. Alcohol can cause drops in blood sugar, blood pressure, and body temperature. Pets that consume alcohol often experience seizures and respiratory failure. Please don\u2019t leave your drink unattended when there are pets around!<\/p>\n<p>If you really want your pets to participate in the pumpkin spice life, consider a homemade, pet-friendly pumpkin treat recipe or a pumpkin-flavored treat from the pet store.
